Janetta Gaskins

Janetta Gaskins, 96, of Shelbyville, Indiana formally of Taylorsville and Edinburgh, reunited with her loved ones in heaven on July 6, 2026.  She passed away at Ashford Place Health Campus after a long illness surrounded by her loving family.  She retired from nursing care after serving several years as a home health aide, and a certified visiting health care representative.

Janetta was born April 1, 1930, in Sano, Adair County, Kentucky, the daughter of Foy and Dora Whited Norman. She married Claude Gaskins on February 26, 1948; seven children were born to this union: Phillip (Sheila) Gaskins, Stephen (Mary) Gaskins, Brenda Gaskins, Debra Gaskins, Allen (Pam) Gaskins, and Cheryl (Urban) Sampson.  She is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren, and several foster children.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Claude, son Larry Eugene Gaskins, and grandson, Duane Sampson, and her siblings:  Lester Norman, Wesley Norman, Norma Burton, Nan Cox, Nina Burton, Chet Norman, JR Norman, Nancy Aldridge several nieces and nephews.

Janetta was a natural born care-giver, providing love and support to her children and others.  She was trained in home health care, working in several nursing homes and as a visiting nurse for several years.  Janetta trained in foster care and accepted thirty-four foster children into her home.  In addition to this, she provided long term care to her mother, husband and siblings until their passing.

Janetta attended Shelbyville Bible Holiness Church. She enjoyed cooking for her family and spending time working in her vegetable and flower gardens.

The family would like to especially thank Shelbyville Bible Holiness Church, where she attended, for their faithful visits and transportation support. Additionally, the family would like to thank the staff at Ashford Place Health Campus for their excellent care for the last eight years.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 10:30am on Friday, July 10, 2026, at the Shelbyville Bible Holiness Church located at 2911 E Michigan Road, Shelbyville, Indiana with Rev. Joseph Smith and Dr. Stephen Smith officiating.  Calling will be held Thursday, July 9, 2026, from 4pm to 8pm and one hour prior to the service on Friday.  Burial will be at Rest Haven Cemetery in Edinburgh, Indiana. The service will be livestreamed at shelbybhc.com.
